About
Penny the penguin helps kindergarteners get a feel for how big 10 is. Children look at scattered groups of fish, snowballs, shells and starfish, guess whether each has more or fewer than 10, then count to check. They also decide whether Penny's quick guesses could be right and pick the better of two guesses. Every direction is read aloud, groups close to 10 accept either guess, and each wrong answer gets a spoken hint and another try.
What's included
- 16 scenes with every direction read aloud: a dot warm-up, four guess-then-count groups of up to 16, three could-Penny-be-right checks and a better-guess question
Learning objectives
- Look at a group without counting and tell whether it has more than 10 or fewer than 10
- Count a scattered group of up to 16 to check a guess
- Decide whether someone's guess could be right, and pick the better of two guesses
- Know that when a group is close to 10, it's hard to tell without counting
