About

Two steps: undo the adding or subtracting, then undo the multiplying or dividing. In this grade 7-8 algebra lesson, students put the steps of a solution in order, then solve two-step equations by dragging, typing and choosing, including fractions and a negative coefficient. They pick the first move from a list, finish a worked solution, match equations to solutions, find the mistake in a student's work, model a gym-membership word problem, and finish by catching every equation on a moving belt whose solution is x = 3. Every problem has a read-aloud button, and every wrong answer shows a hint.

What's included

  • 13 two-step equation problems with read-aloud and hints
  • Order-the-steps, drag, type, dropdown and fill-in-the-blank items
  • An equation-to-solution match and a find-the-mistake task
  • A gym-membership word problem to model and solve
  • A moving-belt finale: catch every equation with x = 3

Learning objectives

  • Solve two-step equations of the form ax + b = c and x/a + b = c, including negative numbers.
  • Choose the right first step: undo adding or subtracting before multiplying or dividing.
  • Find and fix an error in a worked solution.
  • Write and solve a two-step equation for a real-world problem.
