About

A kindergarten math lesson with the owl from Owl's Toolbox. Children meet pattern blocks: they notice and wonder about a pile of blocks, see that two green triangles make the blue block, build their own design, drag blocks onto shadows of the same shape, and show how many red or green blocks there are on their fingers. They finish by counting to 10 together. Every direction is read aloud, so pre-readers can play on their own.

What's included

  • 10 scenes with every direction read aloud
  • Free building with real pattern blocks you can turn and fit together
  • A shape-shadow puzzle, two finger-counting questions and two find-the-tool questions
  • Spoken hints after a wrong answer, and a count to 10 at the end

Learning objectives

  • Know that pattern blocks are a math tool, and find them when they're named.
  • Match pattern blocks to outlines of the same shape.
  • Count the blocks of one color in a small group (up to 5).
  • Practice counting to 10 out loud.
