Feature Spotlights
Occasional one-time tips that point out a feature the first time it is relevant, then get out of your way.
As you work in Berdee, you will occasionally see a small tip appear next to a button, panel, or control — pointing out a feature the first time it becomes relevant to what you are doing. We call these feature spotlights. They are how Berdee introduces something useful at the moment it can actually help, instead of burying it in a tour you have to sit through up front.
A spotlight is a short note with a title and a sentence or two. It points at the thing it is describing, so you always know what it is talking about.
They appear once, then they are gone
Each spotlight shows up at most one time. When you dismiss it, Berdee remembers — it will not come back on your next visit, even on a different device. You will only ever see a given tip when there is something new worth pointing out.
They never block your work
Spotlights are quiet and non-blocking. They do not dim the screen, trap your focus, or stop you from clicking anything. You can keep working with a spotlight on screen and ignore it completely if you would rather.
When you are ready to dismiss one, click Got it or press Esc. Berdee will tuck it away and, if another relevant tip is waiting, may surface it next.
They wait their turn
A tip that arrives at the wrong moment is worse than no tip at all, so a spotlight holds back whenever showing it would get in your way:
- While a dialog is open. Settings, a widget's Configure panel, the publish confirmation — the tip waits until you have finished and then appears.
- While you are typing. This one is a promise, not a preference: a spotlight will never take your keystrokes. If your cursor is in a text box, on the canvas or anywhere else, no tip will appear and pull the focus out from under the words you are writing.
- When it would cover the panel you just opened. A hint that hides the widget list you were reaching into is not a hint.
- When you have already seen three this session. Berdee shows at most three tips in one sitting. The rest are not a queue you have to click through — they simply come back another day.
A tip you have not seen is not lost
A spotlight only counts as seen when you actually dismiss it. One that stepped aside for any of the reasons above stays unseen and comes round again the next time it is relevant — later in the same session, or on a future visit. Nothing quietly expires while you are busy.
That also means you can safely ignore one that appears at a bad moment. Carry on with what you are doing; it will find you again.
