Configuring a Number Input Question
Set up a Number Input widget's range, default, and correct answer in a roomy Configure dialog, opened right from the canvas.
A Number Input widget asks a learner to type or slide to a number. Its setup has two parts: what the input accepts (its range and how it looks) and how it's graded (the correct value and how close counts). Both live in a dedicated Configure dialog so you have room to work, instead of squeezing them into the narrow right sidebar.
Opening the Configure dialog
Select a Number Input widget on the canvas. A floating ⚙ Configure button appears just above it.
Click ⚙ Configure to open the dialog. From top to bottom it has:
- A live preview of the widget, so you can see exactly what the input will look like on the canvas while you edit (you can't see the widget itself behind the dialog).
- Scoring — whether the question contributes to the score. The Scoring switch, Points, and Group work the same for every scorable widget.
- Configuration — the correct answer and how close still counts (Tolerance) when scoring is on, plus the layout, the allowed range, the step, and the starting value.
Setting up the input
Work in the Configuration section:
- Layout — choose Input (a numeric text field the learner types into) or Slider (a track the learner drags).
- Smallest Answer and Largest Answer — the lowest and highest values the input allows, shown side by side. (These were previously labeled Min and Max.) A typed answer outside the range is changed to the nearest end when the learner leaves the field, with a short note telling them the allowed range.
- Step — how much each increment of the slider moves (for example,
0.5to allow half-steps). This is also how far the − / + buttons step the value. Typed answers don't have to land on a step. - Show Step Buttons (Input layout only) — sits right below Step. Toggle the − and + buttons that flank the field. They let a learner tap to step the value up or down by Step, clamped to Smallest Answer and Largest Answer. On by default; turn them off for a plain typed field.
- Show Value (Slider layout only) — sits below Step. Shows the slider's current number beside the track, so a learner can land on an exact answer like
9. On by default; turn it off when learners should estimate without seeing the number (an estimate usually wants a Tolerance too). - Default Value — where the learner starts: the slider's starting position, and where the − / + buttons start counting from. The Input field always starts empty, and an empty answer earns no points — it is not graded as the Default Value. A slider the learner never moves is graded at its starting position. See Blank and untouched answers.
- Placeholder (Input layout only) — the hint text shown in the empty field, such as
?orEnter a number 1-10. It can include variables ({{ maxGuess }}). This replaces the old behavior where an empty number field showed a literal0.
Marking the correct answer
Scoring is on by default for number inputs, so the dialog opens with both of these fields already in place at the top of Configuration:
- Correct Value — the number you want learners to reach.
- Tolerance — right below Correct Value, this is how far a learner's answer can be from the correct value and still count as right. A tolerance of
0means the answer must match the correct value exactly; a tolerance of2accepts anything within two of it (so for a correct value of10, anything from8to12is marked right). Tolerance is most useful for estimation and measurement questions, where "close enough" should still earn credit.
Saving your changes
Nothing you change in the dialog affects the widget until you save it. The canvas keeps showing the last saved version while you work.
- Save applies your Configuration and Scoring changes to the widget.
- Cancel throws the changes away and leaves the widget as it was. Pressing Esc, clicking the ✕, or clicking outside the dialog does the same thing. If you've made changes, you'll be asked to confirm before they're discarded, so an accidental click can't lose your work.
Heads-up warnings
The dialog watches for a couple of common setup mistakes and shows an inline warning, with both an icon and a short message, next to the control it affects (and a one-line summary near Save):
- Smallest Answer is greater than Largest Answer.
- The correct value sits outside the Smallest Answer–Largest Answer range, even allowing for Tolerance (only when scoring is on). Learners can't give an answer outside the range, so nobody could get it right.
- On a Slider, the steps never land on the correct value — for example Step
2from0never reaches5. Change Step, or add a Tolerance (only when scoring is on).
These are reminders, not roadblocks — you can still Save with a warning showing if that's really what you want. If the question guards a scene's Continue, publishing flags that the scene can't be passed.
What stays in the sidebar
Only Configuration and Scoring move into the Configure dialog. Style & Layout — colors, the accent (the slider's fill and the focus ring learners see on the field and its buttons), border radius, fonts, and the rest of the widget's appearance — still lives in the right sidebar, the same as every other widget. Select the widget and the sidebar shows its Style & Layout settings while the dialog handles the question itself.
