Configuring a Drawing
Set up a drawing widget's prompt, background, and tool options in a roomy Configure dialog, opened right from the canvas.
Not available yet. Drawing isn't in the studio's widget list right now: we're holding it back until you can see and grade what learners draw. This page applies to a drawing a lesson already has — see Drawing Widget.
A drawing widget gives learners a blank canvas to sketch a response — diagram a cell, plot a graph, show their work. Its setup — the prompt, the background, and which pens and colors learners get — lives in a dedicated Configure dialog with room to work, instead of being squeezed into the narrow right sidebar.
Opening the Configure dialog
Select a drawing on the canvas. A floating ⚙ Configure button appears just above it.
Click ⚙ Configure to open the dialog. Alongside the settings you'll see a live preview of the canvas, so you can see the prompt, background, and grid as learners will (you can't see the widget itself behind the dialog). From top to bottom the dialog has:
- Scoring — the on/off switch, how many points the drawing is worth, and its group. These controls are the same for every scorable widget.
- Content — the prompt, the background, and the drawing tools learners can use.
Setting up the content
Work in the Content section:
- Prompt — the instruction shown above the canvas, for example "Draw your answer" or "Sketch the water cycle." You can include
{{variable}}placeholders to personalize it. - Background — choose Blank, Grid, or Image:
- Grid reveals a Grid style option — Graph paper for plotting, or Lined for handwriting.
- Image reveals an Image picker — drop in a worksheet or diagram for learners to draw over. The live preview shows the picture fitted inside the drawing area, as learners will see it.
- Color palette — leave Offer every color on to give learners all seven colors (black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple), or turn it off and untick the ones you don't want so everyone works from the same colors.
- Stroke widths — leave Allow all widths on, or restrict learners to a subset of Thin / Medium / Thick.
- Highlighter — turn on to offer a highlighter tool alongside the pen.
- Max strokes — a hard cap on how many strokes a submission can contain.
Scoring the drawing
Berdee doesn't grade drawings yet, and you can't see learners' drawings yet. There's no answer key, because there's no single right answer to compare strokes against. There's no screen yet where you view a drawing and give it a score, either. Berdee saves each drawing when the learner submits, but nothing in Berdee shows it to you.
Scoring is on by default, so the dialog opens with Points already at the top. Until drawings can be graded, a drawing is pending and counts 0 of 0 in every score, whatever its Points say. Switch Scoring off anyway: while it's on, the drawing is never a correct answer, so a scene rule that needs every answer right can't be met. See Scoring and what you can see for details.
Styling the canvas
The drawing's colors (canvas, grid, prompt, and toolbar), the prompt font, and the cursor live in the Style & Layout section of the right sidebar — the dialog covers _what_ learners do, the sidebar covers how the canvas looks.
