Assigning Lessons to Students
Assign one or more lessons to one or more students from the classroom page, with two tabs and a search to find the right lesson fast.
Once you've built a few lessons and added students to a classroom, the next step is getting the right lesson in front of the right learners. The classroom page is the home for that work.
You can assign lessons in two ways, and both open the same dialog so the experience is consistent.
Two ways to start
Bulk assign — the Assignments button
From a classroom's detail page, click the Assignments button next to Add Student. This opens the assignment dialog with no students preselected, so you can pick any combination of students in this classroom.
If your classroom has no students yet, the Assignments button is disabled. Add a student first.
Per-student — the row overflow menu
In the student roster, each row has a (...) overflow menu. Click it and choose Assign. The same dialog opens, this time scoped to the one student you clicked. The student picker is hidden and a subtitle confirms _"Assigning to: <student name>"_.
This is the fastest path when one learner needs a quick targeted assignment without disturbing the rest of the roster.
Inside the dialog
Two tabs to find the right lesson
- This Classroom — lessons that have already been assigned to at least one student in this classroom. Useful for reusing the warm-up you already gave the rest of the group, or extending a recent practice activity to one more learner.
- All Lessons — every lesson you own. Useful when you're pulling a lesson from a different unit or reusing something from another classroom.
A search box above the list filters by title and description within whichever tab is active.
Note: If you delete a lesson after assigning it, that lesson no longer appears in This Classroom. The historical assignments remain, but the lesson itself won't show up for re-use until you restore it from Recently deleted on your Lessons page (see Your Lessons List). This is intentional — the tab is a "currently in play" list, not an archive.
Selecting students and lessons
Pick one or more students (unless the dialog is locked to a single learner from the row overflow menu) and one or more lessons. The footer shows the math: _"X lessons × Y students = Z assignments."_ The Assign button is disabled until both lists have at least one selection.
Practical examples:
- Assign one warm-up to every student in the classroom: open from Assignments, click Select all for students, pick the warm-up.
- Send three review lessons to a small intervention group: pick the three students, switch to All Lessons, search "review", check the three.
- Reuse last unit's worksheet with a new student: open from the student row, switch to This Classroom, find the worksheet.
What happens when you submit
Validation comes first
Before any assignment is created, every selected lesson is checked for publish-readiness. If any lesson has unresolved validation errors (for example, a missing submit button), nothing is assigned. The dialog stays open and lists the issues per-lesson so you can fix them and try again.
Successful assignments and skipped pairs
When validation passes, assignments are created in a single atomic operation. The dialog then shows a summary banner like:
Assigned 12. Skipped 3 already-assigned, 1 no longer in classroom.
A few things worth knowing:
- Already assigned — re-assigning the same lesson to the same student is a silent no-op. You'll never create a duplicate. The summary tells you how many pairs were already in place. A lesson you unassigned earlier is assigned again, with a new access code, and the student's earlier attempts stay with it.
- No longer in classroom — if a student left the roster between when you opened the dialog and when you submitted, that pair is skipped (not the whole batch).
- The dialog stays open with a Done button so you can read the summary. Closing it returns you to the classroom page, which has already refreshed.
Reviewing what you've assigned
The classroom page has an Assignments tab that lists every lesson currently assigned to anyone in the classroom, the number of distinct students who have it, and the most recent assignment time. Click View details on any row to jump to the lesson, or Unassign to take it back from the whole class.
This is the educator's at-a-glance view of "what's currently in front of this group."
What's not in this flow
A few related capabilities live elsewhere or are deliberately separate:
- Unassigning — use Unassign on the classroom's Assignments tab, or the lesson's ⋮ menu on a student's page. See Edit and Remove Students and Classes.
- Marketplace lessons — lessons you bought or got for free on the marketplace don't appear here. Assign them from their row in Your Lessons List or from the lesson's own page.
- Co-taught classrooms — lessons shared between educators are out of scope for this dialog. See Share a Lesson with Another Educator.
Pushing a new version to students
Students who are already assigned a lesson stay on the version they were given — even after you (or a publisher) update it — so grading stays stable and no one's in-progress work changes underneath them. When you're ready to roll everyone forward, use Update students to latest on the classroom's Assignments tab. See Push a new version to your students.
