Edit and Remove Students and Classes

4 min read

Fix a student's name or email, remove a student from a class or from your account, unassign a lesson, replace an access code, and rename or delete a classroom.

Rosters change. A student moves to another class, an email gets a typo, a lesson goes out to the wrong group. You can fix all of it yourself, and nothing a student already did is lost: their past attempts and scores always stay in your records.

Fix a student's name or email

Open the student from Students, or use the ⋮ menu on their row on a classroom page, and choose Edit student.

  • Name: type the correct name and click Save. It changes in every class they have with you. The name is yours: if the student also has another teacher on Berdee, that teacher keeps the name they gave the student, and the student sees the name you chose when they open your lessons.
  • Email: type the correct address and click Save. Berdee signs the student out everywhere, cancels the sign-in link it sent to the old address, and emails a new sign-in link to the new one. Their assignments, access codes and attempts stay exactly as they were. Use this when an invitation went to a mistyped address: the link in that email stops working.

A few edits aren't possible here, and Berdee tells you why:

  • The student also has another teacher on Berdee. Their email belongs to them for both of you, so ask the student's school to correct it. You can still fix the name you know them by.
  • The student came from Google Classroom. Their email is managed there; change it in Google Classroom. You can still fix their name.
  • The email belongs to a teacher's or staff member's account. Use the student's own school email.
  • Another student on your roster already uses that email.

If the email you type already belongs to the student's own Berdee account (from another teacher), the student moves onto that account and keeps their assignments with you, under the name you typed. Berdee doesn't tell you whether that happened, and nothing the other teacher sees changes: your access codes only ever open your own lessons.

Remove a student from a class

On the classroom page, open the student's ⋮ menu and choose Remove from class. (Or open the student and click Remove from class next to that class.)

  • The student leaves that class only. Their other classes are untouched.
  • The lessons you assigned through that class are unassigned: they can't open them any more, and those access codes stop working.
  • They stay on your Students list, and their past attempts and scores stay in your records.

Adding them back later works like adding any student. Assign the lessons again and they get new access codes, with their earlier attempts still attached.

Remove a student from your account

Use this when a student has left for good, or was added by mistake (for example, with a mistyped email). Open the student and click Remove from my account, or choose it from their ⋮ menu on a classroom page. Berdee lists what will happen, and the button names the student, such as Remove Sam Lee, so you can't click it by accident.

  • They leave all your classes, and every lesson you assigned them is unassigned. Their access codes stop working.
  • Their name and email are erased from your account. Their past attempts and scores are kept without a name, as your school's record.
  • If another teacher also has this student on Berdee, their account stays with that teacher, untouched. Otherwise the account is closed and they are signed out everywhere.
  • Their place on your plan's student limit is freed.

This can't be undone. To teach the student again, add them as a new student. If they're on a Google Classroom roster, remove them there too, or the next sync adds them back as a new student.

Unassign a lesson

  • From a whole class: on the classroom page's Assignments tab, click Unassign on the lesson's row.
  • From one student: open the student, then in Lesson Assignments open the lesson's ⋮ menu and choose Unassign.

The students can't open the lesson any more, and its access codes stop working. Attempts already made stay in your records. You can assign it again whenever you like; the students get it back with new access codes.

Replace an access code

If a student's code reached the wrong person, open the student, then in Lesson Assignments open the lesson's ⋮ menu and choose New access code. The old code stops working right away. Give the student the new one.

Rename or delete a classroom

Open the classroom and click the ⋯ button at the end of the header.

  • Rename classroom changes its name everywhere, including on your students' class list. A classroom from Google Classroom keeps your new name when you sync.
  • Delete classroom removes the class. Its students leave the class but stay on your Students list, its lessons are unassigned (their access codes stop working), and past attempts and scores stay in your records. Deleting frees the class's place on your plan's classroom limit. A classroom linked to Google Classroom is unlinked; importing from Google later creates it again as a new class. Deleting can't be undone.
